CompEx Gas and Vapours (Ex01 – Ex04)

The ATEX 01-04 Gas & Vapours course provides candidates with the relevant training and practical assessments regarding the installation, maintenance, and inspection of electrical and instrumentation systems in environments containing flammable gases, vapors, or mists.

The qualification consists of four units covering the minimum requirements for working safely in hazardous locations. Candidates learn about the safety considerations applicable to work areas with potentially explosive or flammable atmospheres, as well as the factors used to classify these locations.

The course includes instructions on reading hazardous area certification, labeling, and documentation. It also educates candidates on the primary protection concepts, categories, and levels applied to certified Ex electrical equipment.

Our unique training facilities are custom-built to feature a realistic working environment and simulated hazardous areas. Courses are taught in small groups with a maximum capacity of 6 candidates.

Target Audience

This course is designed for personnel with an electrical or instrumentation background who are involved in the selection, installation, inspection, and maintenance of electrical and instrumentation equipment for use in potentially hazardous areas. It is also suitable for non-electrical or non-instrumentation personnel who wish to gain a baseline understanding of Ex hazardous zones.

Entry Requirements

Candidates must meet one of the following criteria:

  • Working as a competent electrical technician

  • Working as a competent instrumentation technician

  • Electrical/instrumentation engineers with prior practical experience

  • Holding a prior CompEx certification, supported by an employer sponsorship letter

Learning Objectives

  • Identify the correct national regulations, directives, and IEC standards applicable to hazardous locations.

  • Identify the appropriate criteria and descriptors used to classify a hazardous location.

  • Recognize the characteristics of common hazardous gases and vapors covered during the course.

  • Demonstrate a supporting knowledge of how certified Ex electrical equipment—including Ex ‘d’, ‘e’, ‘n’, ‘p’, ‘m’, ‘o’, ‘q’, ‘s’, and Intrinsic Safety (IS)—maintains its protection concept, and how it should be selected, installed, inspected, and maintained.

  • Identify the correct measurement values for both IS and non-IS installations and equipment.

Assessment

Assessment consists of both practical evaluations and an online exam covering the four distinct CompEx units. Successful candidates will demonstrate the knowledge and skills required to meet the standards outlined in the IEC 60079 series and relevant national standards and directives. This qualification focuses on the minimum specifications set out in IEC 60079-0, IEC 60079-10-1, IEC 60079-14, and IEC 60079-17.

Theory Exam

Candidates must complete a multiple-choice theory exam consisting of 60 questions to be answered within 1.5 hours.

Practical Exam

Candidates must complete four practical exams (one per unit):

  • Ex01: 3 hours and 45 minutes

  • Ex02: 1 hour and 30 minutes

  • Ex03: 3 hours

  • Ex04: 1 hour and 15 minutes

NOTE: Non-electrical or non-instrumentation personnel can only be certified with a CSNV (Certificate of Core Competence – Non-Vocation) qualification, rather than a full CompEx certificate.
